There is no boat to Glade Wharf in September, and there will not be one on Labour Weekend either. The transfer that starts every Milford Track walk switches on with the Great Walks season on 1 November 2026 and switches off after the last departure on 28 April 2027 — two operators, three departure slots between them, and a hut booking you must show before you board.

The Milford Track's first obstacle is a lake. DOC's directions are to drive to Te Anau Downs, about 30 minutes from Te Anau, then take a boat to Glade Wharf at the top of Lake Te Anau. There is no road to the start or from the finish, so the boat is the only way in.
That boat keeps DOC's timetable. The 2026/27 Great Walks season runs from 1 November 2026 to 30 April 2027, with the last track departure on 28 April 2027, and both operators run daily from 1 November to 28 April. Hut bookings are already open, which is when most people discover they also need a seat on the water.
Between the two firms there are only two departure times — 11:30 with Fiordland Outdoors, and 14:00 with either — each timed so walkers reach Clinton Hut, the first night's stop, the same afternoon.
A boat-only ticket on this run is really two boat rides bought together: the crossing to Glade Wharf on day one and the hop from Sandfly Point into Milford Sound on day four. Milford Track Transport charges a flat $130 NZD for an adult; Fiordland Outdoors advertises its equivalent from $145, and the word from matters — the figure you pay is set in its booking system for your date.

From Te Anau Downs the boat heads north up Lake Te Anau to Glade Wharf at its head, and the track leaves the jetty along the banks of the Clinton River. The operators quote the crossing differently — Fiordland Outdoors says 50 minutes, Milford Track Transport around an hour, DOC an hour and a quarter — and the spread is mostly boat and weather. The track then climbs the Clinton valley, crosses Omanui/McKinnon Pass and drops down the Arthur valley to Sandfly Point, where a 20-minute boat (DOC's figure) crosses to Milford Sound/Piopiotahi. If you are weighing Fiordland's other lake crossing, the Manapouri–West Arm water taxi works on quite different terms.
DOC puts Te Anau Downs about half an hour up the Milford road from Te Anau, and this small lakeside wharf is where every independent walker's Milford Track begins. Milford Track Transport says parking here is free and asks you to be on the wharf at least 15 minutes before the 14:00 sails; its coach from the Te Anau DOC Visitor Centre at 1 Lakefront Drive leaves at 1.25pm and arrives in time for the same boat. If you drive yourself, the car stays here for four days.
Nothing drives to Glade Wharf: DOC says there is no vehicle or private access to either end of the track. From here the first day is short: DOC gives an hour to an hour and a half along the Clinton River to Clinton Hut, so an afternoon boat still leaves plenty of daylight in November.
Milford Track Transport will not let you on board without a confirmed DOC hut booking, and advises buying transport only once the huts are secured. Seats are limited and the service is seasonal.
Fiordland Outdoors runs the only morning boat, at 11:30; everyone else sails at 14:00. Day one to Clinton Hut is short, so it comes down to how much afternoon you want on the track.
The last pick-up at Sandfly Point is 16:30 with either operator. DOC's day four is 18 km, and it warns you must reach the point in time for the early-afternoon boat.
DOC calls the pre-season track riskier. Transport then needs minimum numbers; talk to Cheeky Kiwi, Easyhike, Fiordland Outdoors or Tracknet, the operators DOC lists.
DOC notes there is no cellphone coverage on the track, so confirm your Sandfly Point pick-up before you set off from Te Anau Downs.
Out of season — May to late October — DOC treats the Milford as an advanced or expert route, with bridges removed from avalanche paths, pit toilets and no rangers in the huts, and transport firms work to minimum numbers rather than a daily run. Between mid-September and Labour Weekend DOC singles out unbridged side streams that flood quickly with spring snowmelt, and even in season avalanche risk can last into December.
Milford Track Transport, owned by Tourism Milford within the group that also runs Ultimate Hikes, puts a 90-seat enclosed catamaran on the 14:00 and advertises a guaranteed departure whatever the weather. Fiordland Outdoors, a local family firm, calls its boats water taxis, adds the 11:30 and collects at Sandfly Point from midday. Its fares are from prices with a price-match offer; Milford Track Transport's are fixed. At the far end, Fiordland Outdoors will relocate a car left at Te Anau Downs to Milford Sound; Milford Track Transport's boat-only ticket leaves you to make your own way.
